Great Gift Giving Ideas for Parents and Grandparents

Our parents and grandparents always touch a special place in our hearts.  Sometimes we find ourselves looking back to past days that were made special by the time and effort our parents and grandparents so lovingly gave.

Special occasions, celebrations and holidays are wonderful opportunities for showing our love and appreciation to our parents and grandparents.  But we don't need to limit our gift giving to only holidays or special events.

With the passage of years our parents and grandparents haved aged and lifestyle restrictions are now necessary.  Below are some gift giving ideas and tips to help you in your search for a great gift find for your parents or grandparents.  Finding ways to give to our parents and grandparents can be simple as giving our time by picking up the telephone and calling.

1.  Unless we follow the trends and developments in technology, we tend to be content with what we have.  Below are some typical items that are rarely replaced unless the product fails.  If your budget permits, consider replacing or adding these items for your parents and grandparents, especially if their income is fixed and has to be tightly managed.  Make sure if you give these gifts that you have someone to install or setup the item for them.  Consider discussing with other siblings the giving of a high price item as a group gift.

* Television – LCD and Plasma are now staple products when buying a new television.  They come in an array of sizes and different features, but truly make a difference in television viewing.  This is especially true with high definition television (HDTV).  The cable box or satellite receiver may need to be upgraded to support HDTV.

* Washer and Dryer – today's models are energy efficient and loaded with features.  If your parents or grandparents have problems adjusting to a lot of bells and whistles, consider getting the basic models because they tend to be easier to operate.  The energy efficiency would afford savings on their utility bills.

* Showerhead – the new showerheads are marvelous, great features such as hand held capability, different selections of water flows, speed control and more.  As we age it becomes harder to get in and out of a bathtub, which makes the shower a more familiar form of bathing.

* Telephone – often as we age our hearing suffers a loss.  The new telephones provide the capability to increase the volume sound making it easier to hear when on the phone.

* Hot Tub – a lot of our parents and grandparents do not own this product.  Frequently, as we age arthritis and achy joints takes it hold.  This would make a great gift to help bring some relief.

* Dishwasher  - if dishes are still being washed by hand, guarantee this will be a much-loved gift.  Perhaps at first there might be some reluctance, but after a couple of uses it will become an indispensable item.  If they already have a dishwasher, take a look at the age of the dishwasher …there is a definite difference in efficiency and performance between the older models and the newer ones.

* Ceiling Fans – if your parents or grandparents homes are without ceiling fans, adding them to their home would be a great way to enhance their home's décor and a valuable aid for energy conservation by helping with the flow of air both in summer and winter.  This is a great gift giving idea, which the parents or grandparents could appreciate year round.

* Ramp – if there has been a shift in their health and they are beginning to have issues with walking then you could not give them a better gift.  In daily use a ramp provides greater safety by offering a handrail for assistance.  Sometimes health issues escalate and having the capability already in place to use for maneuvering a wheel chair would be invaluable.

(These are only a few items that you might consider replacing or adding to your parents or grandparents homes.  The next time you are visiting, take a look around and note for yourself items you feel they might better enjoy if replaced with today's technology enhanced products).

2.  A personalized gift – always makes a cherished gift.  There are many items that you can personalize such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, glassware, books, etc.  These types of gift will not be stored away, but will be used and treasured.

3.  Gather up all your parents or grandparents' old photos that may be in shoeboxes and digitalize them by using a scanner.  Once you have them digitalized you can create slide presentations or other solutions for them to view the photos.  Plus the photo degrading process will be halted when digitalized.

4.  Maybe the budget is really tight this year.  A great gift that you cannot find in a department store, but would be greatly appreciated by your parents or grandparents is the gift of cleaning their gutters or doing some much needed yard work.  These type of tasks can be challenging for the elderly and would be a greatly appreciated gift.

5.  If your parents or grandparents have been animal lovers over the years, but no longer have a pet, consider the gift of a pet from the local animal shelter.  Having a pet in their life can be quite rewarding for an elderly person.  A pet can provide companionship, stimulation and love…what a great gift find.   Be sure before selecting the pet that provisions are in place that the pet can be returned, if things do not work out.  Take into account how much traveling your parents or grandparents do.  If travel is frequently pursued, then perhaps steer away from this gift idea for your parents.

Whatever gift you choose for your parents or grandparents be sure you package it with time and love.  After all…the packaging makes the gift.
